During the Easter Rising, J.T. Davy’s pub near Portobello Barracks was strategically occupied by members of the Irish Citizen Army under Michael Mallin.
A small unit led by Sergeant Joseph Doyle seized and fortified the pub, using it as a defensive position to delay British troops from advancing into Dublin city centre. From there, they carried out sniping attacks, including wounding a British officer, helping protect key rebel positions like the GPO and St. Stephen’s Green.
Although a lesser-known 1916 location, the occupation of Davy’s pub played an important role in slowing British reinforcements during the early stages of the Rising.
