Boland’s Mills was an industrial complex with buildings dating from the 1830s–1870s, later expanded with concrete silos in the mid-20th century. It operated as a flour mill until 2001, after which it was left derelict until redevelopment began in 2016. Some historic stone buildings were preserved, while the newer silos were demolished.
During the Easter Rising, the site served as headquarters for the 3rd Battalion of Irish Volunteers led by Éamon de Valera. Volunteers occupied the area to control access routes into Dublin and engaged British forces during the Battle of Mount Street Bridge, holding them off until the general surrender.
After the Rising, the mills were taken over by the British military, leading to compensation disputes with the owners and labour unrest among workers seeking better pay.
