The files from the collection have demonstrated that archives are essential to our understanding of the Irish revolutionary period. Crucially they enlighten us on the lives of those who took part in the events and shed light on their lives post-conflict. In addition, and as well as detailing the military and some civilian casualties of the Irish Revolution, the files provide the reader with unprecedented and invaluable information on the successful applicants’ dependants’ welfare and social circumstances during those tumultuous years and in later life. It is now time to release a much anticipated series: the Brigade Activity Reports. All individual memory is intertwined with the memories of others and the Brigade Activity Reports are a perfect reminder of this permeable relationship between the individual, familial, local, organisational and wider collective memories.
The release of the Brigade Activity Reports was a key landmark for the national and local commemorations during the Decade of Centenaries.
