Military Archives Image Identification Project

Military Archives Image Identification Project

As part of a new outreach initiative, Military Archives are now asking members of the public for their feedback on some of our collections. In recognition of the fact that families and individuals are often the experts when it comes to the identification of photographic records in particular, Military Archives wants your comments to help us to make our records more accessible.

The first of these initiatives is our Image Identification Project, where we will be releasing historic photographs of soldiers from training and operations at home and overseas in order to glean information on the identities of the personnel concerned. We are also looking for additional background information on the image such as location, photographer, date and context. If you think you can be of assistance, please follow the link to the Military Archives flickr page.

The first photograph sets will involve images from overseas missions in Cyprus and the Congo. We will also be publishing photos from the Cavalry Corps.

We will be looking for subject matter experts to evaluate the accuracy of the information provided by our contributors. If you would like to get involved or if you would like more information, please e mail archives@military.ie.  Note that this email address is for queries on the image identification project only - all general queries should be sent to militaryarchives@defenceforces.ie as usual.
