The RPRMC was established in late 1922 and was responsible for the railway network throughout the Civil war. At that time the railway system was under constant attacks and sabotage operations from Anti-treaty forces. The salvage Corps was responsible for salvaging materials from old British army camps with the view of using these valuable materials for other purposes. During the re-organisation of the National Army in 1924 the RPRMC, Salvage Corps and the Works Corps were amalgamated into the Corps of Engineers.
