Galway South East Brigade – 1 Western Division

This brigade, in the unit formation as set out here, existed on the first critical date 11 July 1921 only. Prior to the second critical date of 1 July 1922 the brigade was re-organised.
Loughrea Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 235 all ranks. The companies of the Loughrea Battalion were located as follows:  New Inn,  Closetoken,  Kilnadeema,  Loughrea,  Bullaun,  Kilrickle,  Kilchreest  and  Mullagh.
Portumna Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 234 all ranks. The companies of the Portumna Battalion were located as follows:  Portumna,  Tynagh,  Tiernascragh,  Ballinakill,  Kilmeen,  Leitrim,  Duniry,  Woodford,  Abbey and  Killimor.
Ballinasloe Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 252 all ranks. The companies of the Ballinasloe Battalion were located as follows:  Cappatagle,  Aughrim,  Ballinasloe,  Clontuskert,  Kiltormer,  Laurencetown and Clonfert.
Mount Bellew Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 190 all ranks.The companies of the Mount Bellew Battalion were located as follows:  Menlough, Caltra,  Newbridge,  Ballymacward,   Gurteen, Skehanagh, Ballinamore and Mount Bellew.
East Galway (Ballinasloe) Brigade: This brigade consisted of two battalions – Ballinasloe Battalion and Mount Bellew Battalion.
Prior to the first critical date 11 July 1921 this brigade had been disbanded. The Ballinasloe Battalion and the Mount Bellew Battalion were then incorporated into the Galway South-East Brigade, 1 Western Division.
