1 Dublin Brigade – 2 Eastern Division

All of the companies of the 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Battalions were located within the city of Dublin.
1 Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 1,306 all ranks and the strength on 1 July 1922 was 804 all ranks.
2 Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 786 all ranks and the strength on 1 July 1922 was 349 all ranks.
3 Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 944 all ranks and the strength on 1 July 1922 was 1,071 all ranks.
4 Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 934 all ranks and the strength on 1 July 1922 was 451 all ranks.
5 Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 340 all ranks and the strength on 1 July 1922 was 174 all ranks. This battalion was also designated as the Engineers Battalion.
6 Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 754 all ranks. By July 1922 this battalion had been stood down and companies posted to the 1 Battalion and 2 Battalion  of the 2 Dublin Brigade. On the 11 July 1921 the companies of the 6 Battalion were located as follows: Dundrum, Ticknock, Bray, Dunlaoghaire, Blackrock, Deansgrange, Dalkey and Enniskerry.
7 Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 252 all ranks. By July 1922 this battalion had been stood down and re-designated as the 3 Battalion of 2 Dublin Brigade. On the 11 July 1921 the companies of the 7 Battalion were located as follows: Tallaght, Clondalkin, Ballinascorney, Brittas & Kilbride, Blessington & Lacken and Valleymount.
Wicklow (Independent) Battalion: Unit strength on 11 July 1921 was 241. By July 1922 this unit had been incorporated into the Dublin II Brigade.The companies of the Wicklow (Independent) Battalion were located as follows: Wicklow, Arklow, Rathdrum, Laragh, Ashford, Redcross & Barnderrig, Rathnew, Avoca, Newtown Mount Kennedy & Kilcoole, Glenealy, Johnstown, Roundwood and Delgany. The Wicklow (Independent) Battalion strength for 1 July 1922 is included in the returns for 2 Dublin Brigade.

Active Service Unit: data in files give a total strength of 50 personnel for the 1 Dublin Brigade ASU. All members serving with the 1 Dublin Brigade ASU are stated to have been full time engaged, and all personnel were attached to the A.S.U. from the battalions of the brigade. No specific strength or operational information is given for the second critical date. The file states that up to two thirds of the ASU had joined the Free State Army by 1 July 1922.
