Military Archives Oral History Project

Military Archives is delighted to announce the launch of the second phase of the Military Archives Oral History Project (MAOHP) on Friday 14th December 2018. This phase is titled Lebanon Stories – 40 Years of UNIFIL . The release features oral histories contributed by soldiers who served with UNIFIL  over the course of four decades. It also includes accounts from local Lebanese civilians who highlight the positive impact that the Irish Defence Forces have made to their lives and their country.

142 extracts drawn from approximately 36 hours of interviews have been selected for this release to provide a first-hand account of Irish soldiers’ experience serving with UNIFIL. These clips also explore some Lebanese experiences living and working alongside Irish battalions over the course of the last 40 years.

The audio clips are available through our website www.militaryarchives.ie and complete interviews can be listened to by appointment in the Military Archives Reading Room.  The MAOHP is eager to conduct interviews with Defence Forces’ veterans and with any people with particular experience or connection to the Defence Forces. If you wish to contact the Archives to enquire further about this project please email militaryarchives@defenceforces.ie . Project staff hope to conduct interviews as expeditiously as possible but this is subject to the availability of our interviewers.
