Geraldine Browne, Regimental Sergeant Major, enlisted in the Defence Forces in 1990, training with the second female recruit platoon. Her grandmother, Kate Ward (nee Donnelly), served in Cumann na mBan during the War of Independence. She has served in the Ministerial Air Transport Service and Air Traffic Control and has served overseas with the 73rd Infantry Battalion in Lebanon. She is the first female Regimental Sergeant Major in the Defence Forces and is the senior ranking female non-commissioned officer in the Defence Forces. RSM Browne is currently serving as the senior Air Traffic Control instructor in Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel. She was interviewed for the Oral History Project on 28th September 2016.

In this clip, Regimental Sergeant Major Geraldine Browne speaks about becoming the Company Commander's driver during her tour to the Lebanon with the 73rd Infantry Battalion (May 1993 – Oct 1993). She recalls that the previous driver had become very nervous as a result of regular bombing and states that she was asked to consider taking over the role. She then became the Company Commander's Driver for Commander Mick Verling to all of the posts he had to visit around the Area of Operations. She states that it is more difficult for a woman in the Infantry environment to elevate and also reflects on the changes for women in the Defence Forces since she joined in 1990.
In this clip, Regimental Sergeant Major Geraldine Browne outlines her role in the organisation of the Centenary Celebrations for the Easter Rising of 1916 in relation to the flight elements of the commemorations. She recalls being on the roof of the GPO during the celebrations. While this was connected to her duties of overseeing the flight operations, Geraldine speaks of her pride of being on the roof that day (given its significance in the Easter Rising of 1916). She reveals that she brought her grandmother's medals on the roof of the GPO as a mark of respect.
