Cookies

‘Cookies’ allow us to provide a better user experience by allowing us to analyse information about site traffic. Cookies are NOT harmful nor can they transmit viruses. They are simply text strings that allow a website to store information on the user’s device in order to retrieve it later. A website can only retrieve the data it has stored on your machine. It cannot retrieve any other information that you have stored on your device.

A typical example of a cookie file is a unique ID number that a website creates for each visitor and stores this on the user's machine. This is the type of cookie that www.militaryarchives.ie  and www.bureauofmilitaryhistory.ie  use. Once an ID exists, the site will recognise your ID each time you visit. It can track your activity on the site including basic information such as the time spent on each page, the route you take to get to various pages and the amount of times you revisit.

By using cookies, Military Archives can determine dates and times that users access our site, how many users use our site and land on each page, how many are repeat users and also trends in user experiences. This allows us to generate statistics which can assist us in recognising areas of strengths and weaknesses on the site.

This website uses Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google, Inc. (“Google”). Google Analytics uses “cookies”, which are text files placed on your computer, to help the website analyze how users use the site. The information generated by the cookie about your use of the website (including your IP address) will be transmitted to and stored by Google on servers in the United States. Google will use this information for the purpose of evaluating your use of the website, compiling reports on website activity for website operators and providing other services relating to website activity and internet usage. Google may also transfer this information to third parties where required to do so by law, or where such third parties process the information on Google’s behalf. Google will not associate your IP address with any other data held by Google. By using www.militaryarchives.ie or www.bureauomilitaryhistory.ie  you consent to the processing of data about you by Google in the manner and for the purposes set out above.
