Document of the Month for August
The Document of the Month for this month consists of a show report and the result listings related to the Military Show Jumpers taking part in the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) Horse Show in 1934. These items are part of a series of files in the Army School of Equitation Collection, which cover the various shows, from local to international, in which the military show jumpers took part, aspects of the administration of the School, and a small number of files relating to equine veterinary matters.
As can be seen from the show report, the Irish Military jumpers were a force to be reckoned with, and the 1930s generally can be regarded as one of the most, if not the most, successful periods for the Equitation School riders in national and international competition.
Thanks to the improvement in the school’s training methods brought in by Colonel Rodzianko and the skill of such officers as Major Ged O’Dwyer, Colonel Frederick Ahern, Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Corry and Captain Cyril Harty (among others), the team won 20 Nations Cups between 1931 and 1939.
