October's document of the month is a sketch drawn by Joseph Togher during an unsuccessful application from Dr Eugene McQuaid under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of his son Eugene McQuaid who was wounded in Newport, County Mayo on 22 February 1923 and died a number of days later. Associated with this application is also a letter from Joseph Togher which states that his party of National Forces became surrounded at Newport and were forced to retreat to an occupied schoolhouse when Togher was wounded. He states that McQuaid was later wounded and brought to the schoolhouse (which was occupied by a teacher and school children) before the arrival of reinforcements which brought him to Westport and later Claremorris.
