The document of the month for March is an image of the first Irish Battalion to serve with the United Nations in Cyprus (UNFICYP). This electronic image has been donated to Military Archives from RSM Francie O’Brien (Retd) . RSM O'Brien has also provided us with a key to some of the personnel in this image, this key will be uploaded to Military Archives Image identification Project website along with a higher resolution of the image.

We are also seeking the assistance of members of the public in identification of the members not named within this photograph.

In order to provide context to the image and the United Nations mission in Cyprus we have also upload an extract from the 40 Infantry Battalion unit history. This unit history provides a detailed summary on all aspects of the 40 Infantry Battalions overseas service and can be viewed in full in Military Archives reading room along with the other unit histories from the Defence Forces 56 years of overseas service with UN and UN mandated NATO missions.
