This copy of the “Ceremonial Order” for President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Ireland in June 1963 comes from a collection of papers concerning the ‘A’ Administration Section of the Defence Forces. This type of order is only published once an event has been confirmed as taking place (a ‘Warning Order’ will inform the relevant military corps/staff of a potential major event in which there will be a requirement for active participation).

The ceremonial order covers all the logistical details for the event/visit of a dignitary, including an hour-by-hour rundown of the various ceremonial duties and military personnel required at each point during a visit such as this. As can be seen when reading through the document for this month, President Kennedy’s historic visit to Ireland required a significant amount of preparation and attention to detail on the part of the Irish Defence Forces, to ensure that it could be regarded as a success.
