Document of the Month for April

The Document of the Month for April is the front cover from the “Guide to the Military Service (1916-1923) Pensions Collection”, with the full guide being made available at the time of the upcoming initial launch.

The first release of material from this collection will be an online releaseonly, which will be available to view on this website (keep an eye on our News Section in the coming weeks for details about the launch). This release will concern veterans of Easter Week 1916, a few prominent individuals involved during the revolutionary period, along with a sample of the Brigade Activity Reports and other material to help give context to the collection as a whole.

The Military Service Pensions Collection is an extremely valuable resource relating to Ireland’s 20th century revolutionary period as it gives us further insight into the numerous actions that took place during this time, from both an individual and organisational perspective. It is also a very large collection containing almost 300,000 files consisting mainly of individual applications from veterans for either pensions or medals in recognition of their service, supporting documentation compiled by the Pensions Board and others to help verify the applications and Department of Defence files regarding the maintenance of, and amendments made to, the initiative over the years through various pieces of Government legislation and inter-Departmental correspondence.

The Military Service Pensions Project forms part of the various commemorations and events being planned for the centenary of 1916. The planning has been undertaken by a Steering Committee made up from Government Departments, the Irish Defence Forces and National Archives Institutions, while an Advisory Board of eminent Irish academics has also helped to ensure that this project saw the light of day. Since 2008, a team of Archivists has been collating, processing, conserving and preserving the files from this collection, while another team has been scanning these files to assist with their preservation. There will be further releases in the run-up to 2016 and announcements as to the dates and the contents of these releases will be uploaded as news items on our website before each one.
